Let’s start the season in Brazil!

Team Aviawest-Vega riders Fraser Hayes and Ryan Anderson started the 2006 race season off in Brazil, racing the Volta Porto Algere UCI America Tour, a 5 day stage race. Ryan kicked the season off with a bang, finishing 6th on the open stage and claiming the U23 leaders jersey which he would hold for 3 days.
The guys accomplished some great early season training, finishing top 50 overall and both were top 10 in the U23 rankings.
MTB Season kicks off in Surrey
April 2, 2006
Team Aviawest-Vega junior Mountain Bike sensation Jeff Clarkson started the BC MTB season on a high note winning the opening race, The Junkyard Dog in Surrey on April 1.
Escape Velocity Spring Series Road Races, Vancouver
March 21, 2006
Ryan Anderson garnered more good results for Aviawest-Vega in the Escape Velocity Spring Series road races #5+6, finishing 2nd in both races. Saturday he was narrowly edged out in a bunch sprint by Will Routley of Symmetrics. Back again on Sunday, Ryan attacked the group with 2 laps to go and powered to the line with one rider in tow, but again it was Will Routley of Symmetrics who got him in the 2 up sprint ahead of the main peleton.

Escape Velocity Stage Race

Ryan Anderson was at it again, mixing it up with the Symmetric Team at an early season Stage Race on the outskirts of Vancouver. Ryan’s best finish was in the final stage Time Trial where he motored to a strong 3rd place finish behind Symmetrics veterans Svein Tuft and Andrew Pinfold en route to a top 10 finish on GC.

Victoria Cycling League, April Wrap Up

The Aviawest-Vega Cycling Team has been very active on the Victoria race scene this spring, racing and also hosting a weekly event in the Victoria Cycling League race series on the popular Latoria Road course.
Team Aviawest-Vega riders dominated the early season road scene in Victoria taking 5 victories in the Victoria Cycling League race series. Emily Sandwith, former Junior National Championship medallist lead the charge with 3 wins and 1 second place finish in the women’s races on her way to an early lead in the overall season rankings.
Ryan Anderson was not far behind in wins with 2 victories including a gutsy solo attack with 3 laps to go in the April 19 Latoria Road Race where he hed off the entire A Group who chased, but couldn’t catch the 18 year old Aviawest-Vega rider.
Aviawest-Vega riders Fraser Hayes and Robin White have also had some good early season results with Fraser finishing in the top 5 three times to date and Robin taking a hard fought 4th in the opening race on the Latoria circuit.
Race the Ridge Stage Race, Maple Ridge

Aviawest-Vega rider Ryan Anderson scores the teams first big win of the season in taking the overall title at the Race the Ridge Stage Race in Maple Ridge. Consistency paid off for Ryan as he finished 3rd in the TT, second in the RR and third again in the Criterium en route to the overall title. Going into the final stage criterium Ryan trailed race leader Cory Forest of Team Kelowna Cycle, but great team work by Fraser Hayes in the crit propelled Ryan into the top spot overall.

In the Women’s race consistency paid off for Aviawest-Vega rider Emily Sandwith after a not so great Time Trial she placed 4th in the road race and 5th in the criterium on her way to a second place overall finish.

Cow Trail Classic, Merit BC

Jeff Clarkson continued his winning ways as he easily won the first big MTB race of the season in Merrit. Jeff rode away from his competitors on the final lap to win by over 4 minutes and take top points in the first of 2 selection races for the BC Mountain Bike Team.
Rat Race, Sunshine Coast , BC

Jeff Clarkson secured his spot on Team BC for the 2006 MTB National Championships with a solid victory in the Rat Race this weekend. The 48 km epic was run in heavy rain and cold but nothing could slow down the charging young Aviawest-Vega rider as he easily won the Under 20 year old race (at 17 years!) placing 16th overall ahead of many of BC’s top pro racers.
Sydney Velo Time Trial, Victoria

Victoria’s Time trial specialists took to the streets on the first Tuesday in May for the inaugural Sydney Velo TT of the 2006 season. Setting a blistering pace right from the start, Team Aviawest-Vega rider Ryan Anderson set the fast time of the night at 23:57 on the 18 km course. Not far behind in 3rd spot was Fraser Hayes at 24:30.
