July 06 BC Superweek
BC Superweek started with the first annual Giro Di Burnaby on July 14th. The 1.8 km course was very spectator friendly and the racing was exciting! The men's race was fast from the start with some big US Pro teams in attendance and racing for $10,00 in prize money. Aviawest-Vega riders Robin White and Ryan Anderson were present in many of the early breaks, but it wasn't until 15 laps to go that the race took shape. A strong attack by Ryan Anderson pulled a group of 8 clear and as the sun set it looked to be the break of the day. A couple laps later another 4 riders bridged up and the lead group of 12 quickly pulled away from the main pack. Coming into the finish Team Navigators set up and delivered their top sprinter to the line to take the win, but Ryan was not far behind, finishing in an impressive 7th place.
Team Aviawest-Vega's next top 10 result came in the Tour De White Rock Hill Climb where Ryan Anderson placed 9th. Ryan, Fraser and Robin were very prominent in the White Rock criterium, but in the end had a tough time setting up for the sprint finish as top US teams Navigators, Health Net and Symmmetrics controlled the pack in the final laps.
The next weekend the Aviawest-Vega boys had learned how to race the big US teams and with 3 laps to go in the Tour of Delta Criterium team mates Robin and Fraser delivered Ryan to the front of the pack where he was able to sprint it out with the best in North America, taking a well earned 9th place.
